The Cocoon Project Begins

28.7.2014

Nicola and I began our project at FIRST (Foundation for Independence Recreation and Social Training Inc) -  a provider of disability support services. 

We began by asking lots of questions of the young people, and collating anwers - this gave us a feel for our participants; where they're at and a possible direction for the content of the Cocoon Project. We thoroughly enjoyed our welcome and the enthusiasm of all at FIRST.

Linda Carroli at the Homesickness School

Linda Carroli will be the guest speaker at the Homesickness School on Thursday, the 17th of July.

Linda will join the school to discuss broad currents in placemaking, with reference to a diverse range of artistic, design and planning processes and practices. She will particularly reflect on the emergence of DIY urbanism and social engagement, drawing on examples and case studies she has presented as part of her Changescaping project. The presentation recognises that the cultural development and engagement in the city is interdisciplinary and relational.

What's Going On?

Cutting up paper plates, sticking drinking straws and cups to cardboard for hats?

Can we really have a voice in fashion, or is it all too hard?

Words are not in short supply in this project but something is. Do we need more people, resources or talent? None of these things are truly as limiting as some may think. Many have done powerful work with far less of these. Confidence is the main issue confronting us right now as a group, as a community. Are we sure of what we want to say? Will our work be liked, understood, worthwhile?

Home Sweet Home

The Last Supper is unfolding: it now consists of four interventions, three of which will take place in Beenleigh.

The first is a commission for some sweet relief for those afflicted by homesickness: a custom-designed chocolate from Poppy’s Chocolate in Beenleigh.

Rebecca Conroy at the Homesickness School

The guest speaker at this week's class for the Homesickness School will be Rebecca Conroy, who will speak about the Yurt Empire, a collective of artists that formed to investigate ideas surrounding habitation and community in Green Square, Sydney.

As with all the school's classes, entry is free and open to the general public.

Afternoon Tea with Jenny Horan

Elizabeth Woods and myself were invited to Jenny's home to talk about what she was going to cook for The Homesickness Project. Jenny told us of her historic family connections to some of the iconic farmsteads in the region. She talked about the recipes she cooked as a young girl and still cooks today.
